Appearance to the Glory of God

In 2010, I preached a message entitled H.A.T.S to the Glory of God. The acronym stands for health, appearance, temperament and security. The text for the message was in 1 Corinthians 10:31 which says, "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." In essence, the message was teaching that our health, appearance, temperament and security should all give glory to God.

I want to talk about the appearance portion of this acronym. We live in a day and time where the ungodly fashion trends of society have infiltrated the church. Everything from women dressing like men, to wearing bikini's on beaches, all in the name of self expression have become common place among Christian women with no conviction. This is unfortunate and gives the enemies of God great occasion to blaspheme the name of the Lord.

1 Timothy 2:9-10 gives the blueprint for fashion among Christian women. It says, "in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works." Proverbs 31:10 and 1 Peter 3:3 support this verse giving clarity to how a woman should present herself in public. They can be summed up like this. A virtuous woman is a godly woman of great value. Her adornment is not merely outward. It more so quietly expresses the fear of God in her heart. She has self-control over her own desires. She does not dress in such a way to attract men because she is a Christian woman who displays who she is through the way she lives.

These verses are pretty straight forward, BUT Christian women are not displaying a revelation of these verses in their daily living. Christian women have no problem showing cleavage. Christian women have no conviction about wearing a dress so short that looks like a shirt. Christian women don't see anything wrong with wearing a bikini to the pool or beach. This type of dress does not reflect Christ and have labeled Christian women with the tag of indecent exposure.

As a Christian woman, you should glorify God in what you wear. Your outward appearance should reflect the inward beauty that is in your heart. This means that your dress should not be provocative, attracting the attention of men. It should not accentuate your accents causing you to look like worldly women who have not yet had an encounter with the Savior.

I pray that you would have an encounter with the Savior and receive the revelation that you have been created in His likeness and image. You have been fearfully and wonderfully made in secret to publicly display His beauty. You are His masterpiece designed to outwardly show the reflection of Him which is intricately woven in our hearts. Therefore, don't buy the lie! Live up to the standard that God has created for you and let your outward appearance reflect His glory that is burning brightly in your heart.

Love, peace and blessings,

Dr. Sheila
