Hate It Like Potato Salad

Hate It Like Potato Salad

Strange title, huh? Well, it will make more sense in a moment. You see, my husband hates potato salad. I mean, he has a radical, strong dislike of it. Many have tried to persuade him by saying, "You haven't had my potato salad." That never works, and if anyone accidentally puts it on his plate, he will either send it back or give it to me. I remember one time there was potato salad on his plate and it touched his chicken and he requested another plate. Like I said, my husband hates potato salad.

Hate is such a strong word, but the Bible says this in Ecclesiastes 3:8, "A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace." This verse clearly says there is a  time to hate. More specifically there are two things that the believer is to always hate and they are sin and the devil. Understand that I am not saying to hate the person who is involved in sin, but we are to hate the sin and the devil who is the influence behind the sin.

So what does that have to do with potato salad? Well, let's look at another verse to bring further clarity. Jude 1:22-23 says, "And of some have compassion, making a difference: and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh." Notice the latter part of the verse says we are to hate the garment that is spotted by the flesh. What this is teaching is that there is a time to have compassion, but as a believer we should always hate, have a radical, strong dislike for sin.

This is where the potato salad comes in. You see, my husband will never come anywhere near, let alone eat potato salad because he hates it. Think of this in terms of sin. What if you hated sin like he hates potato salad? What if you hated fornication like you hate, maybe say, okra or squash? What if you "hated it like potato salad?" This some good food for thought (no pun intended), and I believe that if Christians had this type of strong radical dislike for sin, there would be a lot less sinning going on.

My prayer for you today is that you would begin to seek the Lord to the point that He gives you the ability to see sin like He sees it. Sin is so damaging and the consequences are far reaching. Therefore it would be better to hate it than to indulge in it like you would your favorite food. So the next time you are tempted to sin, just remember this blog and hate it like potato salad or okra or whatever food you won't eat because you hate it.

Love, peace and blessings,

Dr. Sheila
